18th March, 2019 The Ministry of Trade & Economic Development wishes to advise that the Tonga Competent Authority (TCA) has approved the new LPG prices for March 2019 to be effective from Monday, 18th March 2019.
Saudi CP Butane prices continue to fall this quarter although prices rebounded in February. A slow start of the Northern Hemisphere winter heating demand and increasing LPG production from US shale oil and gas have put downward pressure on LPG prices. Saudi CP Butane prices averaged USD 435/tonne in the first quarter1 of 2019, a USD 170/tonne drop compared to fourth quarter 2018. Another major factor affecting LPG prices is the reducing crude oil. Crude prices have been falling in the fourth quarter of 2018 and early 2019, although prices rebounded in February 2019.
Therefore, overall this quarter LPG prices in Tongatapu and Vava’u will drop by TOP 0.52/kg and TOP 0.53/kg respectively. TCA in the 2018 LPG Annual Review approved the implementation of retail price control for the main towns of Ha’apai, Eua and Niua with an addon of TOP 1.90/kg, 1.21/kg and 2.34/kg respectively.
The table below shows the new LPG prices for Tongatapu, Vava’u, Pangai Ha’apai, ‘Ohonua and Hihifo Niuatoputapu. All prices includes consumption tax.

21st March, 2019 TONGANA one-day stakeholder consultation is underway at Tanoa International Dateline Hotel aiming to develop a National Illicit Drugs Strategy to combat against illicit drugs in Tonga. The event was opened by the Honorable Minister for Police, Fire Services and Revenue and Customs Hon Mateni Tapueluelu this morning.
The consultation is a collaboration between the Government of Tonga and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
Hon Tapueluelu said, “The purpose of the National Illicit Drugs Strategy is to identify gaps, capacity issues and integration opportunities in the areas of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, enforcement and underpinned by an objective of reducing the harms associated with illicit drugs.”
He stated that the impact of illicit drugs is widespread and extreme and it is not only a “police problem but rather a “social problem” which highlights the call for cooperation and coordination.
“It stresses the importance of collaboration between government, non-government agencies, the private sector and the community. It is a war that not one ministry can win, nor the government alone. It calls for the country to join together in a coordinated effort to address the issues of illicit drugs in our country and region.”
The consultation is divided into four sessions which include church and community leaders, district and town officers, youth groups, civil society organizations, women groups and the business sectors.

It is important also that you complete your programme on time and return to contribute to the development of Tonga.” He concluded his remarks by stating “I am very proud to be here this evening to witness and celebrate your success story. Your patience, hard work and dedication have been rewarded.”
