01st June, 2021 TONGAN The Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI) today signed the TOP 7.86 million contract to rehabilitate and maintain roads in ‘Eua supported by the World Bank through the Tonga Climate Resilient Transport Project (TCRTP).
The Honourable Minister for MOI, Mrs ‘Akosita Havili Lavulavu, was present at the contract signing along with representatives from the World Bank, Ministry of Finance, and relevant stakeholders.
The Honourable Minister congratulated and wished the contractor all the best with the upcoming works. She extended the Ministry’s appreciation to the World Bank for the support and trust that great outcomes will be achieved through this partnership.
‘Ahononou & Petani Quarry (Tonga) was awarded the contract and is expected to commence work next month. GAUFF-IMC International Consortium based in Germany and the UK will undertake the supervision work in partnership with ITS Tonga Ltd.
The contract includes both rehabilitation and maintenance works. The rehabilitation works will upgrade and improve six sections of local roads in and around ‘Ohonua, Angaha, Pangai, and Ha’atu’a through widening, reprofiling, added drainage, and bituminous surfacing to provide smooth and climate-resilient structures. The total road length for rehabilitation is approximately 6.3km and is expected to take 2 years.
The newly introduced Performance Based Maintenance will be used for the road maintenance instead of the traditional quantity-based approach. The maintenance component will cover a more extended sub-network including the main roads totaling around 35km and provide opportunities to a mainly locally engaged workforce over the next 5 years. The rehabilitated and well-maintained roads will provide improved and safer connectivity between communities.
