Launching of the National Food Safety Awareness Campaign

13rd March, 2018 Tonga’s Food Division together with relevant stakeholders launched the National Food Safety Awareness Campaign this morning at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forests conference room.

The campaign is funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization aiming to provide the public with a reasonable conception of ‘Food Safety’.

Deputy Director and Head of Food Division, Metuisela Falesiva said this is a follow on from the FAO Tonga Technical Co-operation Project (TCP) ‘Strengthening Food Control in Tonga’ with the financial support of USD$223,000 started in April 2015.

“A various outputs including revised of Food Act and developed of Food Bill 2017 was endorsed by Cabinet and awaiting to be tabled in Parliament. The development of the draft food regulations 2017 training and authorized of official Food Inspectors, enhanced coordination of line ministries involved in food control, such as the MOH, MCCTIL & MAFF and so forth.”

He said this is the final component of the project in developing appropriate communication tools to promote food safety.

The awareness campaign worth TOP$27,646 and it involves various activities which will be conducted in the next few weeks.
