Two secondary schools received laptops donated by ITU

20th April, 2017 Ten laptops were presented by the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communication (MEIDECC)  and Foreign Affairs yesterday to the principal of Tonga High School Mrs. Taisia Ma’u.

In a separate event in the afternoon, the CEO for MEIDECC Mr. Paula P. Ma’u also presented another 10 laptops to Tupou College’s Acting Principal Mr. Saimonita Paongo at Toloa.

The laptops were gifted by the Secretary General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Mr. Houlin Zhao.

CEO for MEIDECC Mr. Paula P. Ma’u said the IT equipment donated to the schools were part of the promise made by Mr. Zhao during his first official visit to Tonga last year.

“Mr. Zhao met with the principals of Tonga High School and Tupou College to observe the use of PCs in the computer labs and to discuss with the two principals the challenges faced in regards to ICT,” he said.

“The discussions made with the two principals highlighted the need for more laptops and he offered to donate 10 laptops to each high school.”

Mr. Paula  P. Ma’u said the laptops aimed to enhance students learning and for them to utilize it for academic purposes such as project research and sharing information.

He urged students to make use of the laptops for academic research and hoped that both schools will benefit from the donation academically and technically through accessing to complex ICT development.

Mrs. Taisia Ma’u expressed her sincere gratitude to Mr. Zhao, the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and his ministry for the contribution made to enhance the development of ICT in Tonga High School.

Mr. Paongo also thanked Mr. P. Ma’u and MEIDECC for their ongoing support to the school through various projects. He noted that the donation will help boost students understanding.

The laptops donated were part of a four years ICT Infrastructure Project that was implemented last year in both high schools.
