  • Two week programme to open with World Leaders Summit on 1-2 November, to which Prime Minister Hon. Rev. Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa has been invited
  • Programme for 26th Conference of the Parties will deliver on the Presidency’s four key goals : mitigation; adaptation; finance; collaboration

The UK’s Presidency Programme for COP26 to drive forward climate ambition and action against key issues has been unveiled. This programme will run alongside the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) formal negotiations which will focus on the remaining aspects of the Paris Agreement.

Beginning with the World Leaders Summit on 1-2 November, each day will focus on a different theme, from advancing progress on key priorities like clean energy, zero-emission transport and protecting nature, to ensuring the participation of women, girls and young people is at the centre of climate action.

COP26 President Alok Sharma said:

“The COP26 summit in Glasgow is our best hope of safeguarding the planet for everyone, building a brighter future and keeping the 1.5C target alive.

“I have been pleased to see progress and momentum on the four key goals I have been talking about to governments across the world and the presidency programme will continue this throughout the two weeks of the summit.

“From finance to energy and gender to adaptation these are vital issues that need to be addressed to make COP26 inclusive and successful.”

A detailed programme and negotiations schedule will be published in due course.

Pacific leaders engage in High Level Climate Dialogue

As part of key preparations for COP26, on 8 July, COP26 President Alok Sharma hosted a High Level Climate Dialogue with Pacific Leaders. In this virtual meeting, the Leaders set out their priorities for COP26 including the disproportionate and devastating impacts climate change – a phenomenon not of their creation – has on livelihoods in the region. President Alok Sharma reaffirmed his commitment to an inclusive COP26 that delivers for the most climate vulnerable countries, including those across the Pacific.
