05th December, 2019 TONGAN The Asian Development Bank (ADB) in partnership with the Government of Tonga has signed a Project Readiness Facility (PRF) for the preparation of two major transport sector projects in Tonga.
1. The Nuku’alofa Ports Upgrade Project of Queen Salote International Wharf; and
2. The Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge Project
The ADB funding support has engaged two experienced and specialized firms for the detailed engineering designs of the two projects.
a) Royal Haskoning, a Netherlands firm for the Nuku’alofa Ports Upgrade Project; and
b) Chodai Co. Ltd from Japan for the detailed engineering design of the Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge Project.
On 6 September 2019, His Majesty’s Cabinet approved the Bridge crossing from Folaha to Ma’ufanga/‘Umusi which supports Tonga’s Strategic Development Framework’s (TSDF) national outcome for a more reliable, safe and affordable transport services for Tonga and its people.
In the next few months, investigation surveys will be conducted in the Folaha and ‘Umusi areas by technical specialists, immediately followed by detailed engineering designs. Surveys will require access to the surrounding areas of Folaha and ‘Umusi. As such, the Ministry of Infrastructure in close collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will contact any persons who may be directly affected by the project including landholders. We ask for your cooperation and assistance to advance these landmark projects.
