19th September, 2018 Thirty seven (37) Tongan citizens received scholarships funded by the Government of Australia to take up university studies starting 2019 in Australia and the Pacific region.

Two scholarship schemes were open for Tongan citizens to apply for from 1 February – 30 April this year, which included the Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) and the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships (AAPS). A total of Fifteen (15) applicants for the AAS were offered scholarships for post-graduate level studies in Australia, while twenty two (22) applicants for the AAPS were offered scholarships for undergraduate and post-graduate level studies in universities based in Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu. Areas of study for AAS and AAPS appear below.

Since 1997, the Australian Government has awarded more than 400 scholarships for Tongan students to undertake long term higher education in Australia and the Pacific region.

Australia Awards are long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The scholarships aim to contribute to the development needs of Australia’s partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements. Awards provide opportunities for people from developing countries, particularly countries located in the Indo-Pacific region, to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at universities in Australia and the Pacific. The scholarships are a platform to help develop the skills and knowledge of scholarship recipients to drive change and contribute to development in their own countries.
