9th May, 2016 ‘Atele Government Primary School held their first maths competition last Friday to end their Numeracy weeks.
All levels participated in the contest and the students were divided into groups consisted of top, average and below students.
Principal of ‘Atele GPS Ms Leotisia ‘Aonga said the contest was conducted because the Maths Secondary Entrance Examination results last year were poor.
“The results of the maths paper from the last secondary entrance examination were so bad. So we were thinking of setting up something that will encourage students to like maths,” she said.
Ms ‘Aonga said that there were significant improvement after the Numeracy Weeks started.
“On the first week of our Numeracy weeks, I set a maths test for class six. Five students had zero mark so we brought in these students and gave them activities to do.”
“I then set a second maths test and there was a great improvement. The number of students passing with flying colours increased and none of the class six students scored zero.”
According to Ms ‘Aonga, the program was planned from the beginning of the first term.
“When we planned our work plan for the whole year, we chose this month as the Numeracy Month and the first two weeks as the Numeracy Weeks.”
Ms ‘Aonga stated that this was the first time for ‘Atele GPS to conduct such program and they were hoping to continue it in the future.
Presented at the competition were Education Officers from the Ministry of Education and parents.
