OIREP Gender and Safeguard Training at MEIDECC

29th March, 2018 A one-day workshop is currently underway at the Energy Department under the Ministry of MEIDECC, aiming to support the planners and staff of the Department of Energy, MEIDECC and Tonga Power to bring gender balance into the planning cycle and the implementation of Renewable Energy (RE) projects.

The training is funded by Australia (DFAT), through Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project (OIREP).

Director of the Energy Department, Dr. Tevita Tukunga said, “The gender workshop training today will be a useful contribution to address the needs to have gender balance in all sectors including the multimillion investment in renewable energy sector development in Tonga jointly contributed by Australia , ADB, EU, Danish government, GEF and Tonga Government.”

“Clearly, gender’s broad applications and usefulness will no doubt improve quality of government services in the areas where it will be utilized,” he added.

He acknowledged Australia’s assistance which helps to improve the quality of service given by the Tongan Government to its people.

“We are most grateful for Government of Australia’s contributions and we wish to acknowledge and maintain the Australia-Tonga Friendly Trade and Cooperation. We look forward to further partnership and cooperation with development partners in the development of renewable energy sector in Tonga.”
