22nd January, 2018 English l Tongan The public is hereby notified that the Electricity Commission has approved the new power tariff of 85.14 seniti per unit to be effective from 1st February 2018. The new tariff rate is an increase of 3.94 seniti from the current power tariff of 81.20 seniti per unit which became effective since 1st July 2017. The increase in the price of electricity is largely attributed to the under recover fuel costs of around $2.8 million pa’anga to end of this month, January 2018. Fuel prices increased by $0.1791 (or 14.6 percent increase) per litre since June 2017.
Government still subsidises through its Lifeline Subsidy of 15.14 seniti per unit of the 85.14 seniti per unit to bring the power tariff down to 70 seniti per unit (or 18.64 percent reduction) for the first 100 kWh consumed by all residential customers in Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua.
