31st May 2016 The Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga will conduct the orientation and the primary selection of applicants of the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: MEXT) Scholarship for 2017 as outline below. Research Students *Applicants generally must have been born on or after April 2, 1982.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities either as a (non-degree) student or a regular student seeking a degree.
FIELD OF STUDY
- Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Moreover, the fields of study must be subjects which applicants will be able to study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities.
- The fields of study may be restricted to particular fields by the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General (hereinafter referred to as the “Japanese diplomatic mission”) in the applicant’s country.
- A student who studies medicine, dentistry or welfare science will not be allowed to engage in clinical training such as medical care and operative surgery until he/she obtains a relevant license from the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare under applicable Japanese laws. Those studying traditional entertainment arts such as Kabuki and classical Japanese dances, or subjects that require practical training in specific technologies or techniques at factories or companies are excluded from this restriction.
Undergraduate Students
*Applicants generally must have been born between April 2, 1995 and April 1, 2000
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT)offers scholarships to international students who wish to study at Japanese universities as undergraduate students.
FIELD OF STUDY
Those who wish to study in Japan as an undergraduate student must choose a field of study (major) from (1) or
(2) below. Applicants may enter a first, second, and third choice.
- Social Sciences and Humanities
Social Sciences and Humanities-A: Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language, others.
Social Sciences and Humanities-B: Economics, Business Administration.
Note 1: Applicants who wish to major in fields other than those listed above (“others”) may have difficulties in finding universities that can accept them.
Note 2: Any fields related to “Economics” and “Business Administration” in Humanities B are not included in “others.”
Natural Science-A: A Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric and Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture), Civil Engineering and Architecture (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering), other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology).
ANatural Sciences-B: EA Agricultural studies (Agriculture, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries), Hygienic studies (Pharmacy, Hygienics, Nursing), and Science (Biology).
Natural Sciences-C: EA Medicine, and Dentistry.
Note: A student who intends to major in Natural Sciences and would like to choose more than one major is required to choose and select first-, second-, and third-choice subjects from the subjects in parentheses from within the same course (i.e. Natural Sciences A, B or C). However, a student who selects Course C as his/her first choice may choose his/her second-choice subjects from Course B or C and third-choice subject from Course B as Course C offers only two subjects.
Specialized Training College Students
*Applicants generally must have been born between April 2, 1995 and April 1, 2000.

FIELD OF STUDY
Those who wish to study in Japan as a student at a specialized training college should choose a field of study to major in from (1) to (7) below.
- Technology
- Personal Care and Nutrition
- Education and Welfare
- Business
- Fashion and Home Economics
- Culture and General Education
- Other Fields
Note 1: Select a field of study from (1)-(7) above, and enter it in “Preferred field of study in Japan” on the application form. Applicants may also refer to a separate sheet titled “Majors and related subjects for field of study”, and enter a first and second choice of subjects from the same field of study.
Note 2: Applicants who choose (7) “Other Fields” are required to specify what kind of field they want to study in “Chosen field of study and subjects in Japan (Field of study)”on the application form.
Note 3: For applicants who choose (7) “Other Fields,” there may be cases when there are no accepting colleges or it is difficult to be accepted at a college because the period of study exceeds that of the MEXT scholarship.
Note 4: Applicants who select “Other Fields” for a field of study should specify their chosen subject in “Chosen field of study and subjects in Japan (First choice of subjects, Second choice of subjects)” on the application form.
1. Orientation
The Embassy of Japan will hold the orientation for those who wish to study under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program for 2017.
- Date and time: Saturday, 11th June
9:00-10:00: Research Students
10:00-11:00: Undergraduate Students
11:00-12:00: Specialized Training College Students
- Place: SUITE 2, 3rd Floor, National Reserve Bank of Tonga Building
*Note: Please call the Embassy by 10th June for the purpose of security clearance, required by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga Building.
2. Application procedure
Applicants must submit the documents to the Embassy of Japan within the period shown below. The submitted documents will not be returned.
- Period: from Monday, 20th June to Thursday, 23rd June
- Place: Embassy of Japan, the 5th floor of National Reserve Bank of Tonga Building
- Documents to be submitted: Refer to Outlines of each scholarship program through the Embassy’s website.
3. Primary selection
The Embassy of Japan will carry out the primary screening of applicants by means of an interview, a written examination, a review of the submitted documents.
- Written examination
- Date: Monday, 27th June, 9:00-17:00
- Subject: Refer to Outlines of each scholarship program through the Embassy’s website
- Place: Tonga Institute of Education
- Notification of the result of the written examination
The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who pass the written examination on Friday, 1st July, between 13:30 and 16:30pm.
- Interview *those who pass the written examination will have the interview.
- Date: Wednesday, 6th July 14:00-17:00
- Place: Embassy of Japan, the 5th floor of National Reserve Bank of Tonga Building
- The notification of the results of the primary selection
The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who pass the primary selection on Friday, 8th July, between 13:30 and 16:30. Applicants who pass the primary screening will be recommended by the Embassy to Japanese Government, MEXT.
- Procedure After the primary selection

5. Secondary selection
MEXT will carry out the secondary screening of applicants based on the result of the primary selection by the Japanese diplomatic mission
6. Notification of the selected applicants
- MEXT will accept applicants whose placement of universities or colleges was made as MEXT scholarship grantees.
- Applicants who have passed the primary screening at a Japanese diplomatic mission are not necessarily accepted as MEXT scholarship grantees. Applicants who were not accepted by any universities nor colleges will not be selected as MEXT scholarship grantees.
- The Embassy of Japan will call the applicants who are accepted as MEXT scholarship grantees between January and March 2017.
